The new book tells the story of women baseball players.

FARMINGTON – Author Susan Johnson will read from her new book, “When Women Play Hardball,” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at the University of Maine at Farmington.

It will be in Lincoln Auditorium in the Roberts Learning Center. Her reading is the first presentation in a visiting writers series sponsored by the Writers Guild and the Creative Writing Program.

Her book is an account of the lives of women who played professional baseball in a league of their own. The book focuses on the Rockford Peaches, a premier team in the league that was based in Johnson’s hometown of Rockford, Ill., during her girlhood. A fan of the Peaches throughout the team’s existence, Johnson later found and interviewed all the women who once played for that club and for the Fort Wayne Daisies.

The book that has resulted, according to The New York Times, is “particularly engaging because behind every historical anecdote is a personal recollection.”

Johnson’s reading is free and open to the public. It will be followed by a reception and book signing.
