Washington’s free-agent pickups make the difference.

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) -John Hall gave the “JetSkins” just what they wanted Thursday night.

Hall kicked a 33-yard field goal with 5 seconds to play, giving the Washington Redskins a 16-13 victory over the New York Jets in the NFL’s season opener.

Hall, one of four Jets free agents signed by the Redskins in the offseason, also made kicks of 50 and 22 yards as each of the so-called JetSkins did his part in a grudge match created by an offseason player tug-of-war.

Patrick Ramsey, not the most nimble quarterback in the world, set up the winning score with a 24-yard scramble to New York’s 31-yard line.

Ladell Betts carried three times for 17 yards to wind down the clock for Hall’s attempt.

Laveranues Coles and Hall had early success against their former teammates as the Redskins took a 13-10 lead over the Jets after three quarters .

Coles had five receptions for 106 yards, and Hall kicked field goals of 50 and 22 yards to help give the Redskins the lead.

The opener marked a week-long culmination of the hype surrounding Coles, Hall, Randy Thomas and Chad Morton. All four left the Jets as free agents in the offseason for the Redskins.

Washington went into halftime with a 13-7 lead, but Ramsey was intercepted by Donnie Abraham on the Redskins’ first drive of the third quarter. Abraham returned the pick 12 yards to the Redskins 26.

The Jets could not do much, even with the good field position, and settled for a 30-yard field goal by Doug Brien with 7:35 remaining in the quarter.

Curtis Martin and Vinny Testaverde were ineffective. Martin had 12 carries for 42 yards, while Testaverde was 12-of-21 for 84 yards.

New York had a 7-3 lead after the first quarter, but the Redskins scored 10 points in the second to go ahead. Ramsey threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Darnerien McCants to take a 10-3 lead with 8:21 remaining. On the drive, Jets safety Jon McGraw sustained a concussion when he tackled Robert Royal following a 20-yard reception. He left the field on his own power and did not return.

The Redskins scored again with 2:41 remaining when Hall kicked his 22-yarder.

On the eight-play drive, Coles had two sensational catches.

On second-and-7 from the 15, Mo Lewis just missed sacking Ramsey, who threw a pretty pass that Coles caught in stride for a 48-yard gain. Following the reception, he did a little dance and stared at the Jets’ sideline.

Two plays later, Coles had a 22-yard reception that put the Redskins at the Jets 12.
