People interested

in the program should contact the town clerk.

HARTFORD – Town Constable Chuck Merritt told Selectmen Thursday night that he had been in contact with the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department and is looking at the second or third week in October to have Crime Watch meetings with a sheriff’s deputy.

They plan three nights of meetings to get the program started. Though they have no formal committee presently, Beverly Murphy, who has been helping to get the program started, reported that she is keeping the unorganized committee informed.

Merritt is seeking people in other areas of the town to attend the meetings and help set up the program in their neighborhood. Selectman Chairman Scott Swain asked that people who would be interested to contact Town Clerk Monica Mailly.

In other news, Code Enforcement Officer Kay Hawkins said she will be issuing a citation to a person found cutting brush in the Shoreland Zone on Canton Lake.

Swain read a request from a citizen to modify an ordinance for a temporary mobile home as he didn’t want to put in a permanent concrete slab. He plans to build on the site. It was voted to send the request to the ordinance committee.

Selectman Lee Holman reported to Hawkins that she had noticed two illegal dumps. One site was on Davenport Road and the other was on Darrington Road.

Holman also reported that she attended a meeting of the Oxford County Commissioners and that Hartford had been moved into District 2, which is under commissioner Fred Kennard.

Lianne Bedard was voted to the cemetery committee. Swain reported that the 911 road signs were going up at intersections and all signs are ready to be put up.

Holman mentioned the hazardous waste pick-up in the Buckfield Town Office parking lot from 9 until noon Sept. 17. This includes any corrosive, flammable or toxic waste. She will be attending an Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments workshop on hazardous waste disposal on Sept. 15.

Tom Abraham presented his problem of a piece of land he has been trying to buy for 10 years only to be told now that there was an owner. Swain said they would research and see if taxes had been paid on the land and would clear up the matter for him.

Swain presented a motion, which passed, to seek a second legal opinion on the property usage dispute on Canton Lake. A suit against the town is pending in Superior Court by Kenneth Mains who contends he has not been able to use his land as he had wanted to because his permit for a driveway and septic system for a camper has been denied.
