A specialty company is helping dry out the Community Center.
FARMINGTON – Town officials have called in a company that specializes in extracting excess water and moisture from buildings and from hardwood gym floors.
A roof drainage system failed Thursday at the Community Center during heavy rains and water flooded the building, causing extensive damage.
The building will remain closed this weekend to functions. Some soccer registrations are being taken in the lobby.
Power had been restored to the building Friday, but the telephone was still out Friday morning.
Town Manager Richard Davis said a big concern is the gym floor where some rippling and cupping of boards has already started.
“We’re hoping it can be reversed,” Davis said.
Center custodians and Recreation Director Steve Shible have cleaned the debris from the gym floor, which included ceiling tiles, insulation and pipes, which had been torn out after flooding.
Shible said a company from New Hampshire was coming in Friday night to extract water and moisture from the walls, ceilings and floors.
The number of ceiling tiles in the gym showing water damage had grown significantly since Thursday, Shible said.
“We need to get the moisture moving,” he said.
There is water still trapped above ceiling tiles, in light fixtures, and in floors and walls.
A computer firm looked at computers in the recreation room, and it is believed they’re beyond repair, Shible said.
RPH of Jay, which installed the drain system two years ago, read a newspaper article about the damage and came to the center Friday to assess the situation, Shible said.
Davis has initially estimated the damage at “tens of thousands of dollars.” He has contacted the town’s insurance company. Davis also has said that the taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for this damage.
