St. Bonaventure, N.Y. – Jeff Spiker scored on a breakaway 36 seconds into the second overtime as LaSalle University defeated the University of Maine 1-0 in men’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.

The Black Bears outshot LaSalle 6-4 in the first half and 10-9 overall but could not muster a goal as Stash Graham made six saves to register the shutout.

Rensselaer 4, USM 0

TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute received goals from four different players to shut out Southern Maine, 4-0, in the season-opening matchup for both teams in men’s soccer action Saturday.

Senior defender Taylor Benjamin put the Engineers (1-0) up 1-0 in the 30th minute when he redirected a free kick from sophomore midfielder Ed Sellitto past Husky (0-1) freshman goalkeeper Kane DiBenedetto. Seven minutes later, freshman Scott Owens made it 2-0 with a shot into the top left corner.

The Engineers added another pair of unassisted goals in the second half, out shooting the Huskies 16-6.
