NORWAY – A combination of nonprofits and government agencies are encouraging people age 50 and over to celebrate living well.

The group is sponsoring “Older and Wiser,” a half day of seminars, exercise and lunch on Oct. 15 at the Second Congregational Church.

Cathy Planchart, community relations manager for Seniors Plus in Lewiston, said the workshops will include health and wellness topics and some geared to the business end of being over 50 years of age.

Susan Goran, a registered nurse with Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, will be the keynote speaker. Planchart said Goran’s speech, “Humor: Not Just a Laughing Matter,” will blend the importance of diet and exercise in limiting disease and disability, and the value of laughter to a healthier life.

She also said there will be workshops related to aging well, with a focus on health and physical activity.

The morning workshop topics will include cooking, communicating with a physician and keeping a positive attitude. Among the five topics in the afternoon are living with Alzheimer’s disease, Medicare and MaineCare, and the passing on of personal possessions.

Before lunch, there will be an exercise session where participants can chose from tai chi, yoga, chair exercises or a group walk.

The doors will open at 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 15 and keynote speaker will begin at 9 a.m.

There is an $8 registration fee. Planchart said registration will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The registration deadline is Oct. 3.

The day is sponsored by Seniors Plus, Healthy Oxford Hills, AARP, Community Concepts, Norway Rehabilitation and Living Center, the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension.
