PORTLAND (AP) – Rough weather in the Atlantic means Portland will be seeing visits from an additional three cruise ships this week.

The Carnival Triumph, the third-largest cruise ship in the world, docked Monday as previously scheduled. Then the Celebrity Horizon, the Celebrity Galaxy and the Celebrity Zenith will pay visits over the next three days.

Jeff Monroe, city director of ports and transportation, said Portland serves as a backup choice for cruise lines during hurricane season. “These three additional calls will bolster what has been a weak tourist season,” he said.

The change of plans were caused by Hurricane Fabian and Tropical Storm Henri .

mean a record three ships will visit on Thursday, when the Zenith joins the Nordic Empress and American Eagle in visiting Portland.
