I am deeply saddened about where we as Americans have come.

The tragedy of Sept. 11 is just that, a tragedy. This horrific event has changed our world forever. The tragedy of the event and the loss of life are enormous, but many are being deceived by the wealth that such an event can bring.

Victims’ families are still trying to claim monetary rewards. It is true that no one can place a dollar value on a life, however the average cash payout from the victims’ fund is $1.5 million with the highest award being $6.8 million and the minimum payout $250,000.

As I write, we have military sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, aunts, uncles and friends serving in our armed forces. They dedicate everyday to continuing our freedom in the Unite States. My son serves in the U.S. Navy.

He entered the military out of high school. Three years later and he has matured and learned many lessons.

How much is a life worth? If my son died today, my husband and I would receive $8,800. What kind of sacrifice is that to a taxpaying citizen? I believe that the military is being overlooked.

Families of Sept. 11, I’m sorry for you loss. Our family, too, has been affected by tragedy, but now I see a greater tragedy. We have become focused on money and how to get it. Why not give it to the ones who are fighting for our freedom.
