FARMINGTON – A seven-inning charity softball game was a total blowout if you look at the 33-2 score, but because $460 was raised, participants agree it was a hit.

About 100 people attended Saturday night’s game at Hippach Field, which pitted members of law enforcement from around the county against a 50-and-older group of community members, said organizer Marc Bowering of the Farmington Police Department.

All of the money raised at the benefit game went to the Maine Special Olympics, and organizers hope it becomes a yearly spectacle.

“Every little bit helps,” Bowering said about the charity performance. “And everyone had a real good time.”

Deputy Aaron Turcotte of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department who moonlighted as a shortstop for the game said it meant a lot for law enforcement officers to have the opportunity to give back to the community while off the clock.

“There was a good crowd there, and that made it a lot of fun,” he said, noting that the score, which put the police on top of the 50-and-up team by a romp, didn’t reflect the competition.

“It’s a great thing. We were there not just because we love the game but because was for a good cause.”
