OXFORD – The Farmer’s Horse Pulling at the Oxford County Fair began Wednesday. It continues tonight; draft horse scooting and twitching will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11. Friday, Sept. 12 will bring the 2,900- and 3,000-pound class, at 9 a.m., long distance pulling at 1 p.m., and the 3,600 pound 20-foot pulling continues followed by the 3,100-pound pull. At 5:30 p.m. the Three Horse Hitch will go the distance and at 7 p.m. the 6-foot eliminating pull for 3,200-pound class will be held. Saturday, Sept. 13, will offer pulling at 9 a.m., with 2 pounds of rock to 1 pound of horse and at 1:30 p.m. the 3,200-, 3,400- and 3,600-pound distance classes. The Sweepstakes classes will follow.

Fair animals

OXFORD – Children will be arriving at the Oxford County Fairgrounds with their 30 market lambs, 14 beef and 10 swine to be weighed, shown and sold during the fair. At 6 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, the market lambs will be weighed then the beef and swine. Animals will be divided into groups of light, medium and heavy weight. At 1 p.m. Thursday, market lambs will be judged for the quality of their meat and graded with either a blue, red, or white ribbon. Beef will be judged at 3 p.m. and swine at 5 p.m. Youths must submit a record sheet that shows how long it took them to take care of the animal, the cost, and special equipment purchased. The auction will begin at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12, under the covered show ring beginning with the market lambs. Youth interested in raising an animal for next year’s fair should call Jackie Young at 743-9427 for an application. Youths must live in Oxford County, or the towns of Poland, Mechanic Falls, Minot, Turner, Harrison or Livermore.

Car event canceled

OXFORD – The remote control car contest scheduled to be held at the Oxford County Fair has been canceled. The family organizing the event has been called away due to ill health in the family. They are planning to organize the show for next year’s fair.

Conflict workshop

NORWAY – A workshop titled Conflict Resolution for Families will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at the Norway Memorial Library on Main Street. The workshop will be led by Deb Dunlap of the Maine Parent Federation and Katey Branch. For more information call 743-2423.

PARIS – Abused Women’s Advocacy Project will conduct volunteer training for five weeks on Fridays beginning Sept. 12 at the Chamber of Commerce Building. Grand Parade

OXFORD – The 2003 Oxford County Fair Grand Parade will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13. Lineup will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at the new harness racetrack. The entrance is at the racetrack gate. The time in the fair flyers, premium book, on the radio and in inserts states 11 a.m. The Fair Committee would like to apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Library card signup

NORWAY – Norway Memorial Library is holding its library card sign-up during September and October. September is official card sign-up month at the library. Children who receive new library cards during these months will have their pictures taken. The pictures will be featured in a display on the wall at the entrance to the children’s department. OTISFIELD – A bow hunter safety training program will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, Sept. 16 and 18, and beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at the Lake Thompson Fish and Game Clubhouse on Paine Road. Students ages 10 to 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the full program. Maximum capacity is 40 students. Preregistration is required. Phone Perry Edwards at 743-6290 no later than one week prior to the program. This program is taught by authorized instructors who donate their time to the cause of greater outdoor safety, and sponsored by the Lake Thompson Fish and Game.
