FARMINGTON – Most of the ceiling tiles downstairs and about 10 percent of tiles in the gym will need to be replaced at the Community Center. The recreation center remains closed. The cleanup is continuing after a roof drainage system failed a week ago and rainwater flooded the building.

Town Manager Richard Davis estimates it will cost tens of thousands of dollars to repair damage.

Floor tiles on the estimated 40-by-40-foot area where townspeople vote downstairs are going to have to be removed and replaced, Davis said.

Vinyl tiles had just been laid on the basement floor in May and the glue hadn’t cured long enough, he said. The floor was just waxed four times last week.

“It’s too bad,” Davis said. “It really is a shame, but what can we do?”

The dance floor will also have to be removed and it could be three weeks before the town knows if the gym floor will need to be replaced.

Caleb Rackliffe of Farmington has been hired to remove ceiling tiles, Davis said.

A New Hampshire firm, Munters, which specializes in removing moisture from buildings has been running several blowers throughout the building since the weekend.

They come in each day and check the moisture level, Davis said.

Contractors are coming in to give estimates on replacing flooring and ceiling tiles, he said.

Davis said the town will open the building up as soon as possible for recreation use. It may be intermittently at first, he said, because of work that needs to be done.
