DETROIT (AP) – Thomas Bonner, former president of the University of New Hampshire, has died. He was 80.

Bonner, who died Sept. 2 in Scottsdale, Ariz., was UNH president from 1971 to 1974. He also was a trustee of the state unversity system.

At UNH, Bonner was instrumental in increasing support for cooperative extension and marine programs.

He was president of Wayne State University from 1978 to 1982 and also served as president of Union College in New York and as provost of the University of Cincinnati.

Bonner was a leading medical historian and wrote seven books on American medicine.

Upon leaving Wayne State’s presidency, Bonner was named president emeritus and distinguished professor of history and higher education at the university.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Firnhaber Bonner, a son and a daughter.
