BRUNSWICK – Martin’s Point Health Care will offer four self-esteem workshops for teenaged girls this fall.

The “Go Girls!” workshops will include discussions about body image, eating disorders and the connection between the media and self-esteem. The sessions will also include a look at advertisements, their development and underlying messages.

“Being dissatisfied with your size and shape extracts a high price from girls, affecting their self-esteem, their relationships with others, their performance in school – and their health,” said Joyce Sarat White, who leads the Brunswick program.

According to White, research has shown that up to 10 million women and girls and one million men and boys have anorexia, bulimia and other eating disorders. Between 40 and 60 percent of high school girls believe they weigh too much, with 15 percent considered “chronic dieters.” But two-thirds of them aren’t overweight.

“Go Girls!” workshops will be held from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 18, Oct. 16, Nov. 20 and Dec. 18 at Martin’s Point Health Care in Brunswick.

The program is free and open to area girls. Space is limited and reservations are accepted.
