TURNER – Visually impaired students will receive a unique opportunity to learn about animals of Maine, Africa and other parts of the world by touch.
Through Dort and Meredith Bigg of Turner and the Maine Chapter of Safari Club International, the students will have the opportunity to touch numerous animals and African cultural artifacts during a special presentation on Saturday, Sept. 13.
Dort’s interest in animals drew him to become a certified Maine guide, although by profession he is an attorney. All the animals have been legally harvested from excess populations. None are endangered species. Also the meat in most cases was donated to people who otherwise may not have enough to eat.
Each year about 3,000 school children have a chance to tour the nationally recognized animal collection, but no touching is allowed. This time an exception will be made. A club member will offer information about the animals and guide the students through the exhibits.
It is the intention of the Biggs to eventually give the collection to the town of Turner along with funding to perpetually maintain it for a public museum.
