The board also changed its

meeting time.

WEST PARIS – Selectmen voted unanimously Thursday to close the town office Oct. 9 to allow the staff to attend the Maine Municipal Association’s annual convention Oct. 8-10.

“This gives the people in the office a chance to go to the convention and attend classes that are offered to update municipal officials on changes in state laws and a chance to see what new laws may be on the books that need to be aware of,” Chairman Wade Rainey said.

The board also voted to change its meeting from Oct. 9 to Oct. 8 from 3 to 5 p.m.

Town Clerk Cheryl Shattenberg was authorized to see how much money can be saved on the town’s insurance for town buildings if the deductible is raised from $250 to $1,000.

“I bet it would make quite a difference,” Selectman Howard Gurney said. “A lot of towns go with a $1,000 deductible and I don’t see why we wouldn’t be just as well of if we did the same.”

Shattenberg plans to report to the board next Thursday.

The town’s insurances are purchased through the Maine Municipal Association Risk Management Program.

Rainey reported that fuel prices through June 30, 2004, have been set for both diesel and No. 2 furnace oil through a partnership with SAD 17.

“The school district does the bidding and we share in the prices they approve,” Gurney said, “although our diesel price is a bit higher than what the schools get it for. The price for No. 2 heating oil, though, is the same.”

The diesel fuel from Union Oil Co. is $1.025, compared to the school price of $.9871. The No. 2 heating oil from C.N. Brown is $.8780.

Rainey said he plans to talk with Dwight Merrill of D&E Sanitation regarding covering some of the bins at the transfer station with heavy duty tarps to keep water and snow from collecting and adding weight to the bins.

“I want to make sure putting tarps on the bins won’t be a problem for Dwight. I don’t think it will, but I want to be sure,” he said.

The price of heavy-duty commercial tarps was reported by transfer station attendant Wayne Theofrastou at $187.50 each with three to be covered.

A decision will be made as soon as Rainey is able to discuss the issue with Merrill.
