AUBURN – Two men died and a teenage boy was seriously injured in a single-car accident near Exit 12 of the Maine Turnpike on Friday.

The 1989 light blue Cadillac was headed south when it drifted off the highway, striking a guardrail, and ultimately hitting and wrapping around two trees, State Police Trooper John Poirier said.

“There are no marks in the roadway at all, there’s not even a touch of the brakes,” he added.

The driver, Colby L. Berry, 77, of Spring Hill, Fla., died at the scene. Clarence E. Garland Jr., 59, of Limington died after being transported by helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Dale Garland, 14, also from Limington, who was a passenger in the back seat of the Cadillac, suffered internal injuries. He was in the operating room at CMMC late Friday night, Poirier said.

Police were trying Friday night to determine whether Clarence and Dale Garland were related.

There were no witnesses to the 5:25 p.m. accident, Poirier said. The driver could have had a medical emergency or fallen asleep, he added.

At the scene, a pine tree appeared to protrude from the passenger side of the vehicle. The front end destroyed by the impact. The car was approximately 20 feet off the side of the tarred shoulder.

Traffic backed up for several miles as all four lanes of the highway were closed for about 20 minutes to allow the LifeFlight helicopter to land.
