OLD ORCHARD BEACH – It wasn’t planned but it certainly had a positive effect.
Livermore Falls opened the second half with an accidental on-side kick leading to a 20-point quarter as the Andies finally put away Old Orchard Beach 33-14 in Campbell Conference high school football action here Friday night.
“I told him to kick it down the right hash and he whiffed on it,” said Livermore Falls coach Brad Bishop. “It helped. We had been moving the ball a lot but we didn’t seem to be scoring a lot.”
The Andies (2-0) moved the ball throughout the game. Junior fullback Brad Bryant ran for 206 yards on 23 carries. One in particular, his longest of the game at 48 yards, gave Livermore Falls the lead less than two minutes into the contest.
“Having early success in a game like that gets me really pumped up,” said Bryant. “I just try to stay focused and read my line’s blocks. They do a great job.
Despite having the Seagulls’ (0-2) number, Livermore Falls managed just one more score before intermission.
Following an Old Orchard punt, the Andies took control at midfield. With the exception of a 19-yard completion from Dane Hanson to Chuck Drake, it was all Bryant.
Bryant opened the series going left for 25 yards and capped it four plays later by going right for 24 more and the score for a 13-0 lead.
Our guys are fine,” said Bishop. “But we have to get better at things. We made an adjustment at halftime with one play. Sometimes I think kids have a tendency to lay back when you get an early lead. That is something you have to overcome against good teams.”
Whether it was the on-side kick or the adjustment, the Andies went to work in the third quarter.
Bryant went up the middle for 10 yards and a score with 8:52 remaining to make it 19-0.
Then it was Drake’s turn as the senior rushed 38 yards for the score at the 6:39 mark to make it 26-0. He did it again on a 44-yard carry three minutes later to round out the Livermore Falls scoring.
“I get a majority of the carries,” said Bryant. “And that really sets up Chuck. He stays focused and makes his cuts. He had a couple of nice runs.”
“He’ll run the ball and he’ll make a fake,” added Drake. “Then they will come back and give it to me and the hole’s wide open.”
Drake finished with seven carries for 90 yards.
At about the 10-minute mark of the final frame, Bishop replaced everyone on the field with the second unit. The Seagulls posted both their scores in the last five minutes of the game.
“We just ran out of gas,” said Old Orchard Beach coach Dean Plante. “We had freshman and sophomores doing things that no one would have freshman and sophomores doing. We are thin right now.”
The Seagulls dressed 20 players for the game, 10 of them freshmen. Seven players were ineligible to play.
“Our kids are fine,” said Bishop. “Our first group shut them out and we did some good things.”
