EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – Derrick Knight rushed for 170 yards and Quinton Porter threw a pair of touchdown passes to lead Boston College to a 24-14 win over Connecticut on Saturday.
Knight had 78 yards in the first half, including a key 34-yard run on third-and-3 to set up Sandro Sciortino’s 40-yard field goal just before halftime. The Eagles (2-1) began the seven-play drive on their own 20 with less than two minutes left to take a 17-7 lead at intermission.
Boston College snapped UConn’s six-game winning streak dating back to last season and also spoiled the first sellout at the new 40,000-seat Rentschler Field.
Will Blackmon led the BC defense with two interceptions and 11 tackles. The Eagles held Terry Caulley to 99 yards, stopping his string of 100-yard games at six.
UConn (2-1) remained winless over BC in the 11-game series that dates back to the early 1900s. The Eagles were making their first trip to Connecticut since 1927.
Porter went 14-of-27 for 156 yards. He and Jason Lilly hooked up for a 25-yard score in the first quarter on a third-and-14. He also hit David Kashetta for a 29-yard score in the third quarter.
Dan Orlovsky threw for 258 yards and two TDs for UConn. He completed 26 passes but was picked off three times. His 55 attempts set a school record.
Holy Cross 42, Georgetown 24
WORCESTER, Mass. – Quarterback John O’Neill threw four touchdown passes and Steve Silver ran for 160 yards as Holy Cross defeated Georgetown 42-34.
Holy Cross won despite four touchdown passes from Georgetown’s Andre Crawford to Luke McArdle.
Holy Cross (1-1, 1-1 Patriot League) led 21-14 at halftime and appeared to break the game open early in the third quarter. O’Neill connected on a 72-yard pass to Nick Larsen, then again on a 46-yard pass to Sean Gruber, extending the lead to 42-14 with 3:07 left in the third.
Northeastern 42, Rhode Island 39
KINGSTON, R.I. – Anthony Riley ran for 132 yards and Peter Harris added 118 more to lead Northeastern to a 42-39 win over Rhode Island.
The Huskies registered 302 yards on the ground while Rhode Island gained 406.
Rhode Island quarterback Jayson Davis ran for 148 and Jason Ham for 136. Rhode Island snapped a 21-21 deadlock with 13 seconds remaining in the first half when Shane Laisle kicked a 38-yard field goal.
Villanova 48, New Hampshire 14
DURHAM, N.H. – Joe Casamento threw for three touchdowns and scored one and Martin Gibson ran for three more as Villanova beat New Hampshire 48-14.
Villanova (3-0, 1-0 Atlantic 10) took a 6-0 lead when Gibson returned the opening kickoff 90 yards. His 1-yard run gave Villanova a 19-0 lead at 7:40 of the first quarter and his 42-yard run capped the scoring in the fourth quarter. He finished with 100 yards rushing on 11 carries. Casamento completed 22 of 31 passes for 245 yards.
Mass.-Dartmouth 29, Plymouth St. 0
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Shawn Theriault rushed for 189 yards and two touchdowns to lead Massachusetts-Dartmouth to a 29-0 victory over Plymouth St.
Theriault scored on a 1-yard burst midway through the second quarter and added a 7-yard score in the third quarter for a 14-0.
The Corsairs (2-0) won their 12th straight regular season game and handed Paul Castonia a defeat in his Plymouth St. coaching debut.
