I am writing this letter in response to the Auburn city council meeting I attended on Sept. 8. Let me start by commending Councilors Shields, Bilodeau and also City Manager Finnigan for not joining in on the obviously premeditated verbal attack by Mayor Guay against Councilor Mennealy.
This meeting ended in what looked more like a kangaroo court than a city council meeting with the mayor leading the charge for Mennealy’s resignation and chastising him for publicly criticizing the city manager without coming to the Council first. Mind you, this was all taking place in a public meeting.
The attack was continued with Councilors DeFillip, Livingston and Matzen, all using McCarthyism as their theme. During this attack, I was appalled at Livingston’s inability to control his personal feelings by screaming at the audience when they applauded. Maybe Livingston should consider resigning if he can’t keep his personal feelings from interfering with his professional duties as a city councilor.
Some people may not agree with Mennealy’s actions or the waves he creates. It is obvious that Mennealy has been singled out by the pack as not going along with the program, or as being someone who has a different idea of where the city of Auburn’s priorities should be placed. I look at Mennealy as a guard dog to the city coffers. If we had more guard dogs and fewer lap dogs in city government, I doubt the city of Auburn would be having the financial hardship it is now faced with.
