PARIS – Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce Director John Williams admits that he’s not much of a golfer. But, he believes that he sure knows how to stage a golf tournament.

Two courses, a scad of prizes and the chance to win a new car highlight the 17th annual Gold Classic on Sept. 20 and 21. And there is a banquet planned to wrap up the two-day event.

Williams said he will keep the shotgun-start approach to the tournament, which was tried last year for the first time.

In a shotgun style tournament, golfers all start at the same time, from different holes.

“We changed the format last year because this is a fun tournament and intended to raise money for the Chamber,” Williams said. “I’m not aware of any other chamber tournament that holds two days of golf over two courses.”

Half of the golfers will play the nine holes of the Norway Country Club twice, while the other half plays twice on the nine-hole Paris Hill Country Club. Players switch courses on the next day.

Williams said tournament organizers decided the banquet, which is usually held inside, would be held under a tent at the Paris Hill club.

He also said there will be a hole-in-one contest in which the first person to ace the par-3 second hole in Norway would win a new Buick, courtesy of Viking Motors. Golfers must make the hole in one on the first time they play the second hole.

Other contests include a putting contest, a long drive contest and an on-the-green contest on the sixth hole at both clubs for a mini-golf vacation at Sugarloaf USA.

He also said the Chamber will be giving away cash certificates to the course pro shops and a multitude of raffle prizes.

To date, there are 29 teams of four players each signed up, with a maximum of 36 teams.

Williams said single players are welcome to enter, and they will be matched to teams.

The entry fee, includes 36 holes of golf, cart and banquet, is $75 per person.
