WALES – The one thing the Maranacook girls’ soccer team has been able to do in bunches this season is score goals, and that didn’t change Monday.
As hard as Oak Hill tried to find a way to stop the Black Bears, Maranacook still produced a 5-1 victory. The Black Bears have punched in 23 goals in their first four games despite being shutout in one of those matches.
Though the Raiders did a fine defensive job on the Black Bears’ leading scorer, Toby Martin, Maranacook (3-1) managed the kind of balance it desires in such situations. Jackie Mrazik scored twice and assisted on another. Ali Trafton had a goal and an assist while Melissa Piper and Kelly Neptune each added goals.
“Jackie was tough,” said Maranacook coach Peter Poulin. “That was a really tough goal she got (just before the half). These are the kids that you have to have score. You have to split it up because everybody marks Toby.”
Martin scored a school record 25 goals last year and already has eight this season. She was held to one assist Monday. Defender Amanda Favreau did a superb job defending her until Hillary Goodhartt came out of the net to spell her in the second half.
Goodhartt was playing her first game in goal, an effort to bolster the Raiders’ (1-3) hopes after losing veteran keeper Hope Nadeau last year. She did a nice job, facing 16 shots in the first half.
“She said, ‘I want to try it. I want to see if I can be more aggressive,'” said Oak Hill coach Wendy Milliken. “She’s my best defensive player out there, and she’s smart game-wise. So I said, ‘Let’s try it.’ She did well. Maranacook’s a tough team.”
The Black Bears put the pressure on early. Both Martin and Mrazik had ample opportunity to score but couldn’t bury their chances.
“We didn’t finish, and we could have,” said Poulin. “We had a few shots that should have gone in.”
Oak Hill came close to taking the early lead when Dana Bonin had a chance at a rebound at the left post but put it over the net. Maranacook’s defense did a fine job limiting the Raider’s top scorer Danielle Sargent. The Raiders were outshot 16-3 in the first half.
“They did a really great job holding off Danielle from scoring,” said Milliken.
Finally, with 18:44 left in the half, the Black Bears broke the stalemate. Mrazik jumped on a loose ball in front and put it high into the net.
“The ball just bounced off another player and I turned and shot it,” she said. “I think it was a relief because we started off a little slow, not as strong as we usually do.”
Piper made it 2-0 with 14:50 left when she beat Goodhartt and the Oak Hill defenders to a loose ball in front. With just 40 seconds left in the half, Mrazik chased down a Trafton pass down the right wing. Goodhartt charged out of the net, but Mrazik put it past her and into an open net.
“I just tried to put it far post and if it was wide, hopefully someone was there and if it went it, it went in, ” she said.
Trafton scored her goal at 4:51 of the second half, putting a shot from the top of the box off the crossbar and in. A Mrazik cross was redirected by Neptune in front with 22:39 left.
Oak Hill got on the board with 18:02 remaining. Goodhartt had been pulled out of the goal to play in the field and scored off a dead ball.
“She came out (of the net) and scored,” said Milliken. “It shows she’s an all-around player.”
