NEWRY – Topics at the third annual Western Maine Transportation Day from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, include future transportation issues like the East-West highway.

The event, which will be held in Sunday River Ski Resort’s Grand Summit Ballroom, features two concurrent sessions and bus tours of Bethel and Newry on the Mountain Explorer.

The first round-table session, Tomorrow’s Transportation for Western Maine, which begins at 2 p.m., includes an update on the East-West Highway and new highway and bridge projects for western Maine.

The session will also explore how the new Wal-Mart distribution center in Lewiston will impact the western Maine region.

Topics for the second session, which begins at 3:15 p.m., include definitions of the Port of Auburn and the High-Speed Rail Corridor and what it will do for western Maine.

Additional items involve Amtrak and whether or not it will be extended through western Maine into Canada, and the proposed Auburn Passenger Intermodal Facility.

The event is presented by the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments.
