FARMINGTON — Courtney Rittall drilled in a shot off a set play midway through the first half and goalie Courtney Guth made 13 saves as Morse shutout Mt. Blue 1-0 in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference girls’ soccer match Tuesday.
The action was furious and fast paced by both teams because of the conditions. The morning rains had made the footing slippery, plus some lengthy grass had the players swinging wildly through the ball.
Mt.. Blue (2-2) certainly played aggressively by pressuring the offensive zone, but several crossing shots failed to connect. The shots by Sarah Pluck, Meghan Ladd, and Heather Groder and Ashley Weeks that made the crease were kicked away by Guth.
“We had several opportunities,” said Mt. Blue coach Jeannie Beaulieu. “We’ve been working on our positioning, so every one is in the right place at the right time. It’s coming together and we’re able to execute better when we keep up the intensity.”
The Cougars had carried the play during the first 20 minutes of the first half, but couldn’t punch through the Morse defense. Pluck had a shot on net, but Emily Frey slid over and deflected the ball away.
Morse (1-1-2) reversed the flow and was eventually awarded a corner. Rittall fed the ball in from the left side to Lauren Kinne who advanced forward. Rittall quickly rushed in and received a pass. Cougar goalie Audrey Ramos (four saves) stepped up to cut down the angle, but Rittall one-timed the ball in to the far corner of the cage with 7:45 remaining in the first half.
“We didn’t make any adjustments in personnel,” said Morse coach Deb Lepkowski, whose team has had trouble scoring “I don’t have the reserves to put in anyway. It was more of what I had to say to the girls and they responded. Then the defense stepped up in the second half.”
