BRUNSWICK – Fifty-five junior volunteers donated 3,900 hours to Mid Coast Hospital this summer in an eight-week program that ran from late June to mid-August. Students worked in many departments and perform tasks that went from delinting towels for the operating room to watering flowers in the healing gardens.

Age 13 to 18, students represented most schools in the mid coast area, including Mt. Ararat Middle and High schools, Brunswick Junior High and High schools, Freeport High, Lisbon High, Morse High and Bath Middle schools, Wiscasset, Hall-Dale, Richmond and Cheverus High schools. Some will continue to volunteer at the hospital during the academic year.

At the recognition party held at the hospital, Matt Rogers of Topsham received the pin for the most hours, 209, volunteered this summer. Recognized for most hours overall were Theresa Holcomb of Brunswick, 545 hours over three summers, and Jamie Pinkham of Bath, 536 hours over four summers.

Amanda Giblin, junior volunteer coordinator, said students also raised $250 through a bake sale for the MCH Teddy Bear Club, which will be used to purchase stuffed animals for young patients at the hospital. The bears “bring joy and comfort to Mid Coast’s youngest patients.”

In addition to volunteering, students also had the opportunity this summer to learn first hand about health careers.
