NEWRY – Selectmen voted unanimously Monday to accept a $2,000 grant from the Maine Municipal Association to buy equipment for the Fire Department.

Chairman Steve Wight said the grant is not for a large amount, “but all the help the town can get is always welcome.”

“The grant won’t go very far toward a $600,000 firetruck,” he said, “but it will help the department in other ways.”

He said he thought there was another organization involved in providing the money, but he was not sure what the other organization was.

The board also agreed to hold off on setting a date for a public hearing on plans by the Maine Department of Transportation to widen the Branch Brook Bridge on Route 26 north of Newry center.

“It doesn’t seem that we should hold a hearing on the Branch Brook Bridge plan until we have more information,” Wight said.

“They (the DOT) need to have a proposal before we have a hearing. There wouldn’t be anything we could discuss until they do.”

Colleagues Wendy Hanscom and Jim Largesse agreed.
