JAY – The Jay High School football team served notice that it’s a force to be reckoned after pulling off a monumental upset in pouring rain at Taglienti Field Friday night.

Jay put together two quality drives, including the eventual winner on a 20-yard touchdown from quarterback Justin Wells to Ryan Dipompo in the third quarter, as the Tigers upset Boothbay 12-8 in a Class C Campbell Conference game.

Jay (2-1) also rose up with a crucial goal-line stand in the fourth quarter. The defense stopped the Seahawks’ potent running game four plays from inside the three-yard line.

“This was certainly a big win for us,” Jay coach Mark Bonnevie said. “Especially after our one-point loss last week. The kids held together and pulled it off. That goal-line stand was key. We switched from a 50 to a 60. We wanted some beef up front.”

Although the weather was conducive to grinding it out on the ground, Wells (seven of 11 for 71 yards) mixed things up just enough to keep the Boothbay defense from crowding the line of scrimmage.

Jay drew first blood in the first quarter on a 20-yard TD pass to Austin Ouellette (66 yards on 15 rushes). The 10-play, 867-yard drive included a 22-yard pass to Shawn Jacques (three catches, 41 yards).

“We didn’t made any mistakes,” Bonnevie said. “That was key because our kids didn’t turn the ball over.”

Boothbay (2-1) used its smash-mouth attack to chalk up 397 yards. Justin Wood gained 166 yards and D.J. Hocomb had 96 yards, including an eight-yard TD run in the first quarter. Seahawk QB Ryan Babcock only completed two of 10 passes for 31 yards. On the eventual winning drive that covered 80 yards, Wells was effective at mixing up the pass and run. Kyle Richards picked up two first downs on the drive.

Boothbay had two more possessions late in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers recovered a fumble and Joel Ouellette intercepted a pass with 11.1 seconds left to seal the deal.

Wells also took a strategic safety.
