Auburn crews are nearing the end of their road work list as cold weather approaches, according to City Engineer Steve Ranney.

Crews will be closing Martindale Road this week to install a new box culvert. The city is still taking bids for a street reconstruction project this fall along Vickery Road and that project probably will begin in early October.

That should be the bulk of the road work in Auburn for the summer, Ranney said.

“I’m not aware of every pothole in town,” Ranney said.

“It’s the time of year when we do start winding down and start buttoning things up for the winter. Asphalt paving can’t be done in cold weather and even road construction work can’t be done well in the cold.”

Crews will be closing Martindale Road through Wednesday between Hotel Road and Beech Hill Road to replace the failing box culvert. Traffic will be detoured around to Beech Hill Road.

Ranney said the Vickery Road project could begin in early October, but won’t finish until next spring.

This fall, crews will concentrate on repairs to Vickery Road as it approaches Riverside Drive.

“That poses the worst threat in the winter,” Ranney said. “It’s narrow and steep. Our hope is to get that part done this fall and do the rest next year.”

Plans call for a total reconstruction project there, which involves completely digging out the road base and replacing it.

Lewiston paving operations are continuing, with nine road paving projects scheduled this week and three more scheduled next week.

Lewiston Public Works Director Dave Jones said city contractors are also scheduled to begin two road rehabilitation projects on Wednesday. That includes grinding the existing pavement and putting down new asphalt. Crews are scheduled to begin that work on Crowley Road from the Sabattus town line west and on Dyer Road.

Paving on those roads will be scheduled in October, Jones said.

Streets scheduled for paving this week are: Main Street between Stetson Road and the Greene town line; Shawmut Street between Pine and Walnut streets; Pine Street between Howe and Howard streets; Bates Street between Spruce and Ash streets; Bobby Street between Adele and Imelda streets; Bosse Street between Stevens and Pineland streets; Janelle Street between East Avenue and Stevens Street; Webber Avenue between Lisbon Street and the dead end, and Cecelia Avenue between Webber Avenue and Dumont Street.
