NEW SHARON – Selectmen have been exploring options for many years to set up a sand and salt shed on a town-owned site. Voters have already set aside $150,000 for the project, estimated to cost about $200,000, excluding the land purchase.

Selectmen are considering bringing the building proposal to voters at the annual town meeting in March.

The three-member board has received information on licensing and requirements for a site.

Board members also have a site in mind and will be going forward with inquiries in the future, Selectman Maynard Webster said.

The state has classified New Sharon in a No. 3 category for a salt/sand shed. The state is offering to pay 43 percent of the cost of building the shed, and the town’s share would be 57 percent.

“The town would have to foot the bill for the whole project now and wait for the state’s 43 percent for many years down the line,” Webster said.

The state is still working on reimbursing towns for sites in the No. 1 classification, he said.

“If a shed is built and we own the building and the site, contractors bidding for winter snow plowing and sanding would be on an even footing,” Selectman Bill Lane said.
