Thomas Miller, donor recruitment representative, said that many people who could give blood may be counting themselves out unnecessarily. “It’s important to know the facts, especially now when blood supplies nationwide are very low,” he said.

Most people who are at least 17 years of age, in good health and weighing at least 110 pounds can give blood. The Red Cross no longer has an upper age limit for blood donors. Donors can also give blood if they have controlled hypertension or diabetes or had piercing done with a sterile needle or a tattoo over a year ago. Most medications are acceptable, and anyone who has traveled to a malaria area over a year ago can be a donor.

For more information or an appointment, people can phone the American Red Cross at (800) 482-0743.
