BOSTON (AP) – The Boston Bruins assigned 12 players Monday to their American Hockey League affiliate in Providence, R.I., and

sent one player back to his team in the Canadian junior leagues.

Among those sent to Providence, the Bruins’ top minor league team, were goaltenders Tim Thomas and Hannu Toivonen, defenseman Shaone Morrisonn, Kevin Dallman and Ed Campbell, and forwards Darren Van Oene, Brett Nowak, Robert Liscak, Pat Leahy, Matt Herr, Mike Gellard and Doug Doull.

Left wing Patrik Valcak, Boston’s fourth-round pick in the 2003 NHL draft, was returned to Lethbridge of the Western Hockey League.

Among those remaining on the training camp roster are 18-year-old center Patrice Bergeron, goaltender Andrew Raycroft and defenseman Jeff Jillson, who was obtained in the three-team trade that sent defenseman Kyle McLaren to San Jose.

and brought goaltender Jeff Hackett from Montreal.

Bergeron, chosen in the second round of the 2003 NHL draft, has scored two goals in as many preseason games.

Raycroft is competing for playing time with goaltenders Steve Shields and Felix Potvin, who signed with the team as a free agent.

The moves leave the Bruins with 29 players on their training camp roster. The team must cut its roster to 23 by its first regular season game on Oct. 8.
