Road concerns

WATERFORD – The public is invited to a meeting to discuss access and erosion issues concerning the road that goes to Hawk Mountain. The meeting will be 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at the Town Office. The road provides access to the summit of Hawk Mountain, a popular recreation area that affords views of the Lakes Region countryside. In 2001, a survey of the Keoka Lake watershed identified this road as a major contributor of soil erosion that drains into Keoka Lake.

There is concern that erosion could lead to too much phosphorus entering the lake creating a large-scale algae bloom. The meeting is sponsored by the Oxford County Soil and Water Conservation District, Lakes Environmental Association, Keoka Lake Association and the town of Waterford.
