Literacy day fete

NORWAY – Memorial Library will hold its third annual International Literacy Day Celebration from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Guy E. Rowe School’s cafetorium and gym. This event will be co-sponsored by Oxford Hills Family Learning. Activities will include drumming, dance, storytelling and crafts. Jan Kubiak and friends will lead children in drumming their stories, Debi Irons will lead children in the creation of dance routines from Latin America, and Rei Cortez will tell stories of native American origin. Costumes from different countries of the world will be available to try on, and there will be international foods to taste. Children and adults are invited. There is no admission fee.

Tai chi classes

NORWAY – Beginner tai chi classes will be offered from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. Mondays for eight weeks beginning Monday, Sept. 29, at the Ripley Medical Building Harper Conference Room at Stephens Memorial Hospital. Tai chi is the gentle Chinese movement art, which has been recognized by the medical community as beneficial for balance and joint flexibility. The class will be taught by Betsey Foster, who has studied tai chi since the mid 1980s and has taught it since 1993. To register, people can phone 875-2426.

Mideast dances

NORWAY – Middle Eastern and Arabic Dancing will be offered from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays, for eight weeks beginning Monday, Sept. 29, at Art Moves Studio. Cost is $35 monthly or $10 each. This is an introductory class on basic techniques, simple combinations and improvisation. Participants are being advised to dress comfortably. Long flowing skirts and harem pants preferred. No jeans, please. Instructor will be Samick (Shawn George). For more information or to make a reservation, people may phone George at 743-7995. Minimum class size is 6. Space is limited.
