VFW meeting

LEWISTON – Lewiston VFW Post 9150 and Auxiliary will meet at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at the Lewiston Elks Lodge, Lisbon Street. Members should note the change of time. For more information, call Bill Pelletier at 375-7203. All members are invited.

Fall cleanup

TURNER – The Turner Village Cemetery fall cleanup will start on Tuesday, Sept. 30. Persons are asked to remove urns, flower baskets any anything else they do not wish to be discarded.

AUBURN – The Androscoggin Historical Society meeting has been postponed to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, on the third floor of the Androscoggin County Building, 2 Turner St. Dr. Susan Hudson will speak on “Mortality and Morbidity in Lewiston Hospitals, 1894-1908.”

Club lunch

MONMOUTH – The Golden Age Club will meet Wednesday, Oct. 1, for a potluck luncheon at the Packard Activity Center. A video on the Splendid China theme world in Florida will be shown.

Two towns

LEWISTON – NCBI/Maine will present “Lewiston and the Two Towns of Jasper” from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3 and 4, at the Lewiston Armory, Central Avenue.

The film, “Two Towns of Jasper,” will be shown with opportunities to dialogue about the film with community residents. The project is an opportunity to think about how to create communities where all people are welcome, families and businesses thrive, and neighborhoods are safe.

Foliage trip

MONMOUTH – The Golden Age seniors will take a fall foliage tour on Saturday, Oct. 4. The bus will leave the Masonic Hall at 9 a.m. To make reservations, call Ted Parker, Thelda Howe or sign up at the Oct. 1 meeting.

80th birthday

LEWISTON – A surprise party was held on Aug. 31 for Alphee Pratte to celebrate his 80th birthday. A barbecue was held at the home of his daughter, Solange Pepin, and her husband, Richard, of Lewiston.

Pratte has two other daughters, Camille Laliberte of Lewiston and Bibianne Laliberte of Vermont, and a son, Jean of Monmouth. Pratte has 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one on the way.

More than 50 relatives and friends attended. Some traveled from Ontario and Chartierville, Canada, Vermont, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Pratte was a lumberman all his life until retirement. He and his wife, Irene, still go out and cut their own fire wood – eight cords every year.

Pratte is a craftsman who creates unique wooden clocks of all sizes; he carves canes and many other wooden articles.

Needs support

AUBURN – The Abused Women’s Advocacy Project is asking for community support during the Christmas season. The need this year is great due to job layoffs and scarce housing within the community.

The project serves Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin counties.
