TURNER – A man who police say fled into a pond behind his North Shore Drive home late Tuesday night was found dead in shallow water Wednesday morning.
Investigators said Alan Dickey, 39, apparently drowned after running away from police who were responding to a complaint of a domestic argument.
The incident unfolded just before midnight when Androscoggin County Sheriff’s deputies went to Dickey’s home at 45 North Shore Drive.
Police said they had received reports that Dickey was fighting with someone at the home and riding around the property on an all-terrain vehicle.
Shortly after deputies arrived, Dickey fled toward the water behind his home, police said.
“He took off on foot and walked into Beals Pond,” said Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland. “He walked out a considerable distance.”
Police on shore attempted to maintain a conversation with Dickey as he moved deeper into the pond, investigators said.
“The deputies tried to coax him back to shore to no avail,” McCausland said. “At some point, he disappeared.”
Police found a boat nearby and attempted to search for Dickey. Shortly after, Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office divers went into the water.
At about 1:30 a.m., they found Dickey’s body in 10 feet of water. The body was taken to the Maine State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
Beals Pond – also known as Crystal Pond – is located not far from Route 4 in Turner.
It was not disclosed Wednesday what led to the domestic situation that resulted in police being called to Dickey’s home.
McCausland said State Police were called to join the investigation because a death was involved. However, he added that it appeared Dickey died as the result of drowning.
The case remained under investigation by both departments Wednesday night.
