LEWISTON – The Maine State Cat Club, in affiliation with the Cat Fanciers’ Federation, will host a cat show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at the Lewiston Armory, Central Avenue.
Champion McNugget McRed of Jazzy Abbys is a purebred Scottish Fold cat, one of the many familiar and unfamiliar breeds of cats that will be seen at the show.
McRed’s folded ears are the identifying attribute of the new breed that began in Scotland as a spontaneous mutation in 1961. The breed has been established by crosses to British Shorthairs in the U.K. and, in the U.S., by outcrosses to exotic, American and British shorthairs.
Kittens are born with straight ears; the folding appearing after they are 2 or 3 weeks old. Adult Scottish Folds are a round, medium sized cat with a dense coat that may be either shorthair or longhair and comes in a wide variety of colors.
McRed has one yellow eye and one blue eye, which is an acceptable trait that does not affect his eyesight, though same color eyes are preferred. To other cats, the Folds’ ears signal aggression and introduction of a Fold to an existing household cat will take some extra effort.
Scottish Folds are sweet, gentle, undemanding, quiet cats who ask little but to be near the people they love. Nonetheless, at home McRed is playful and exhibits a prankster’s sense of humor. Champion McNugget McRed is owned and exhibited by Stan and Pat Buchanan, Jazzy Abbys Cattery, Carmel.
The show is open to the public and admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children and senior citizens.
