1907 – 2003

DURHAM – Francis Emery Babcock, 96, a long time resident of Newell Brook Road died Tuesday evening, Sept. 23, at his home surrounded by his family, following a short illness.

He was born in Durham June 5, 1907, the son of Emery P. and Mertie M. Clark. He was educated in the grammar schools of Durham, was a 1924 graduate of Lisbon Falls High School and attended Bliss business school of Auburn.

On April 18, 1941 he married the former Vivian C. Goddard in Durham. Mrs. Babcock died Dec. 24, 1991.

Mr. Babcock was a self-employed farmer in Durham for most of his life but had also owned and operated the school buses for the town of Durham for many years.

During the Roosevelt era he also owned and operated a gravel truck, contracting for local government project construction.

He enjoyed the interest of hunting and fishing. He will be remembered by many area residents for his several years as a local cider maker. He was a family man, and always looked forward to the times spent at family gatherings.

Survivors include two daughters, Ms. Priscilla J. Allen and Miss Eileen V. Babcock both of Durham; two sons, Wilbert F. Babcock of Augusta and Jerel K. Babcock of Durham and his wife Sheila of Augusta; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Sylvia L. Davis of this year.
