BRUNSWICK – Marilyn Emery, 71, of Brunswick, died at home, Sept. 24.
She was born in Rumford, the daughter of Perry and Mildred York Judkins. She attended the public schools of Andover and Bethel, and was valedictorian of her class at Gould Academy. In 1954 she graduated from Smith College with honors in philosophy.
She married Guy Emery in 1955; they lived in Cambridge, Mass., where she served as assistant in courses at the Harvard Business School before starting to raise a family. When she lived in Brookhaven, N.Y., she was active in Head Start, Girl Scouts, and the League of Women Voters.
The family moved to Bloomington, Ind., in 1966; there she continued her work with the Girl Scouts and also volunteered at the International Students House of Indiana University, before becoming Executive Director of the Monroe County chapter of the Mental Health Association. With many volunteers and her strong commitment, the chapter became one of the most effective in the state.
After moving to Brunswick in 1988, she served on the school board and worked toward the building of a new high school, and on the board of Sexual Assault Support Services of Midcoast Maine.
She had traveled widely in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan, and had lived for a year in the Netherlands. She was a staunch advocate for peace, for respect for all people, for social services, and especially for children.
She enjoyed gardening, reading, Tournament Bridge, crossword puzzles, interacting with friends and neighbors, and supporting the Atlanta Braves.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years; her daughters, Karen Young and husband Tom of South Glastonbury, Conn., and Kim Emery and partner Kathryn Baker of Gainesville, Fla.; her sister, Dorothy Gray and husband Verne of Farmingdale; her grandchildren, Meredith, Amanda, Jeffrey, and Vanessa; and her nieces, Joan Bickford and Susan Longfellow both of Wiscasset.
She was predeceased by her brother, Stanley Judkins in 1979.
