RUMFORD – Mountain Valley quarterback Zach Fergola scored the initial touchdown and Korey Stairs threw a halfback option pass for a score just before halftime as the Falcons put it all together en route to a 20-0 win against York.
Mountain Valley (3-1) had controlled the first half and then proceeded to break the Wildcats’ spirit by marching 78 yards in a time-consuming drive that ate up the majority of the third quarter.
“I’m so proud of these kids,” Falcon coach Jim Aylward said.
“We’ve got some young kids who are really beginning to believe in what we are doing. This is the second week in a row they got the job done.”
Mountain Valley had used its ball-control offense to drive 66 and 71 yards in the first half. The Falcons ace was 5′ 4″, 145 pound running back Aaron Arsenault, who used his speed to gain 101 yards on 25 carries.
“I just kept two hands on the ball like coach told me,” Arsenault said. “Our offensive execution went well. The offensive line kept bursting forward and opened up some big holes.”
Mountain Valley defensive back Eric LePage recovered a fumble midway through the first quarter. The Falcons then started a drive, fueled by Arsenault’s ability to break the containment. Fergola called his own number on second and goal.
York (1-3) was bottled up by the Falcons swarming defense. The Wildcats biggest play was a 35-yard pass play from Eric Rotad (8-for-17, 150 yards) to tight end Tom Ross.
York punted late in the second quarter and Arsenault ran 16 yards to put the ball in the red zone.
Fergola handed off to Stairs, who then rolled left and passed to LePage for a 20-yard TD. Mountain Valley was playing without three starters, but the defense reared up for three-straight sacks. The Falcons, who haven’t allowed a score in over eight quarters, held the Wildcats to 54 yards on the ground.
“We’re not going to make any excuses,” Aylward said. “The kids showed a lot of heart tonight. We’ve had some injuries, but we will continue to play hard and tonight we didn’t turn the ball over.”
