OLD ORCHARD BEACH — The only thing that may have been running smoother than the halftime entertainment, the University of Maine marching band, was the Jay defense.

The Tigers smothered Old Orchard Beach, allowing just 119 yards in total offense in posting a 33-0 win over the Seagulls in Campbell Conference high school football action at Joe Regina Field Friday night.

The win spoiled the Seagulls’ homecoming festivities that pushed the game late into the evening.

“We ran the ball the best we’ve run it all year,” said Jay coach Mark Bonnevie. “And obviously our defense was very tough tonight.”

It might not have been the smoothest of nights for the Tiger offense but it was there when it counted.

The teams traded possessions for most of the first quarter, the biggest playing coming early. Jay took the opening drive down to the OOB 13-yard line, but the drive stalled.

Facing fourth down, the field goal attempt was blocked and Old Orchard’s Mike Perrone picked the ball up near the goal line. He made it back to midfield before being caught. The Gulls moved the ball a little but were forced to punt.

Jay got on the board late in the quarter after taking the ball near midfield after a punt. It took just four plays for the visitors to score what proved to be the winning points. Shawn Jacques covered the final 38 yards down the right side for the score.

The Tigers added a pair of scores in the second quarter to post a 20-0 halftime margin. Quarterback Justin Wells hit Marc Kelvey down the right sideline for the 43-yard TD pass just over a minute into the second frame.

Later, Wells connected with Jacques for an eight-yard touchdown pass. Jacques caught the ball near the goal line and pivoted into the end zone.

Any remaining doubt disappeared early in the third when Ryan Bourassa intercepted Seagull quarterback Perrone at the about the 25-yard line on the second play of the half and returned it for the score.

An Austin Ouellette score in the fourth rounded out the Jay attack.

“We made some mistakes on offense tonight,” said Bonnevie. “But at the same time we scored 33 points. I was a little worried about a letdown after last week (a huge win over Boothbay) but I think they handled themselves well.”
