WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Deedra Boudreau scored the lone goal in the opening minutes of an overtime stanza to send the University of Southern Maine to a 1-0 win over Eastern Connecticut State College in Little East Conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon.
Boudreau’s goal came as she charged the net and knocked the ball over the Warriors’ keeper for the game-winning shot, moving the Huskies (7-2) to their seventh win of the season.
St. Joe’s 2, Lasell 1
STANDISH – Kristina Regan took a pass from Sarah Kay (two assists) with 6:32 left in regulation and blasted it past the keeper to lift St. Joseph’s College to a 2-1 win in field hockey action Saturday afternoon.
The Monks’ first goal was scored by Davan Clawson at 29:30 of the first half to account for the final score.
Amherst 2, Bowdoin 1
AMHERST-Rachel Carr-Harris netted her first career goal with 2:06 left in the first overtime as the Amherst College field hockey team improved to a 6-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play with a 2-1 win over previously-undefeated Bowdoin College.
The Polar Bears jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Marissa O’Neil scored unassisted in the opening of the first period.
Thomas 3, Castleton State 2
WATERVILLE- Thomas College’s Breanne Petrini fired off a shot late in the second half to break a tie and give Thomas College a 3-2 win against Castleton State College Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers’ (1-1) Amber Richard tied the game early in the second half. Ashley Gibson began the scoring for the team in the middle of the second half.
On the Spartons’ (3-1) behalf, Carrie Black and Michelle Pratt each had a goal.
Football
Colby 15, Middlebury 13
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – James Bradford ran back a 20-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown and kicker John Goss broke a 24-year-old school record with a 49-yard field goal as the Colby College football team hung on for a 15-13 victory over Middlebury College Saturday.
Amherst 21, Bowdoin 0
AMHERST, Mass. – Junior quarterback Marsh Moseley completed 15 passes for 192 yards as Amherst cruised to a 21-0 win over Bowdoin Saturday.
The Polar Bears (0-2) held off the Jeffs (2-0) until the second quarter when senior Fletcher Ladd made a two-yard plunge for the first touchdown of the contest.
The Polar Bears made their best effort on the next drive, advancing to the Amherst 36 on a 17-yard pass from junior quarterback Tom McMahon to senior wide receiver Drew Loucks. But Bowdoin ended up turning the ball over on a subsequent fumble.
Bowdoin’s junior running back Rob Patchett provided the best performance on the day with 111 yards on 27 carries.
Jeff Nolin and Brian Durant caught a pair of passes each for a combined 92 yards in the loss.
Bluffton 36, Husson 6
BLUFFTON, Ohio – Jared Owens carried the ball for three touchdowns to lead Bluffton College to a 36-6 rout of Husson College at Salzman Stadium in football action Saturday.
Bluffton scored five times before the Braves (0-3) responded at the 4:47 mark of the third quarter.
Bryan Lancaster caught a seven-yard pass from Lee St. Hilaire for the only points Husson garnered all day.
Bluffton (1-1) controlled the ground for 237 yards rushing and 78 yards passing in the win.
Mass. Maritime 27, Maine Maritime 26
BOURNE, Mass. – Mike Blomberg’s 17-yard touchdown pass to Max Byrd with 47 seconds left, followed by an afterpoint from Joel Bois, gave Massachusetts Maritime a 27-26 victory Saturday over Maine Maritime.
Maine Maritime jumped out to a 12-0 lead on Patrick Bard’s 65-yard touchdown run and Mark Goggins’ 4-yard scoring run in the first quarter. Max Byrd ran in a 5-yard touchdown to get Massachusetts Maritime Academy on the boards with 1:42 left in the first.
Keith Griffin had a 6-yard touchdown run with 4:02 left in the second, putting Massachusetts Maritime ahead 13-12 at halftime.
Maine Maritime pulled ahead 20-13 in the third, before Massachusetts Maritime tied it. Maine Maritime then pulled ahead again 26-20 after Cody Schmidt scored on a 25-yard pass from Patrick Bard less than two minutes into the fourth.
But Byrd put Massachusetts Maritime ahead for good with Blomberg’s touchdown pass with less than a minute remaining.
Women’s soccer
RIC 3, USM 2
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Caitlin Gavin struck a pair of goals, including the game-winner, as the University of Rhode Island rallied for a 3-2 win over the University of Southern Maine in women’s soccer action Saturday.
Gavin’s second goal came at 81:41 of the contest to propel RIC to the victory.
The Huskies’ (3-4-1) goals came from Devin Edwards 50 seconds into the first half and Eva Hanson at 48:47 of the second half.
Gordon 2, St. Joe’s 0
STANDISH – Lindsay Benson and Chrissy McArthur deposited first-half goals into the back of the net as Gordon College handed St. Joseph’s College a 2-0 setback in women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.
Benson scored the only goal the Scotts would need three minutes into the first half.
Middlebury 4, Colby 2
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Middlebury came back from a 2-0 deficit to pick up a 4-2 win over Colby in NESCAC action Saturday.
Goals from Laura Williamson and Amanda Walsh gave the Mules a 2-0 lead less than 20 minutes into the game.
Brittany Cronin answered for the Panthers with two goals in less than three minutes to knot the game at 2-2.
Mayo Fujii took a cross from Caity Abshere at 55:45 and buried it into the back of the net to give Middlebury a 3-2 lead.
Erin Pittenger scored for the game’s final goal.
Amherst 3, Bowdoin 1
AMHERST – Ashley Harmeling scored her eighth and ninth goals of the season.
And Sophomore Margaret Chute knocked home the game-winner to lead the Amherst College women’s soccer team to its first conference win with a 3-1 victory over Bowdoin Saturday.

Maine 3, Sacred Heart 2
ORONO – Luke Rivard converted a feed from Kevin Forgett at 81:44 of the second half to lift the University of Maine to a 3-2 win over Sacred Heart University in men’s soccer action Saturday.
Justin Stockard added a pair of goals in the win as the Black Bears notched their fourth win of the season.
RIC 6, USM 1
GORHAM – Cory Lopes tallied four goals and Kyle Teixeira chipped in with a pair as Rhode Island College handed the University of Southern Maine a 6-1 setback in men’s soccer action Saturday in Little East Conference action.
Lopes’ game-winning goal came at 27:56 of the first half as he converted a feed from Josh Nelson .
The Huskies lone goal came from Troy Walz on a pass from Zach Ansley at 58:19 of the second half.
Thomas 2, Maine Maritime 1
WATERVILLE-Junior midfielder Ryan Buttice scored on a rebound off a corner kick early in the first half to lead Thomas College to a 2-1 victory over Maine Maritime Saturday.
Thomas jumped out to an early lead when Sophomore forward Chris Inzerillo scored a pass from Tyler Colby.
Terriers freshman keeper Ryan Conrad turned back six of MMA’s 13 shots, including a breakaway in overtime.
Amherst 3, Bowdoin 1
AMHERST, Mass. -The 18th-ranked Amherst College men’s soccer team remained in first place in the NESCAC with a 3-1 win over fifth-ranked Bowdoin College Saturday.
Bowdoin’s Andrew Russo opened the scoring with a point-blank shot to the right side of the net. Amerherst senior Mike York then connected on a header off a corner kick from sophomore Joe Gannon.
Mike Wohl then tapped in the game-winner, courtesy of a deft crossing pass by Ian Lovett. Lovett added an insurance tally just under four minutes later.
Middlebury 4, Colby 1
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Middlebury handed Colby its first loss of the season en route to a 4-1 win as it improved to a 6-0 on the season Saturday.
The Panthers allowed their first goal of the season, although it was on a penalty kick, ending the scoreless streak at 462 minutes.
Following a converted penalty kick from Ryan Boccuzzi, Pat Saunders tied the game for Middlebury less than three minutes later, as he headed in a corner kick from Andrew Stewart. The Panthers took a 2-1 lead late in the half when John Sales scored with a rocket from 25 yards away.
In the second half, Sales notched his second goal of the game while Sam Raymond converted a Stewart pass to make it a 4-1 final.
