BETHEL – At its Sept. 24 meeting, the Board of Assessors adopted a tax rate of $15.50 per thousand dollars of taxable value for Fiscal Year 2004.

Town Manager Scott Cole said Friday that the new rate represents a 7.5-percent decrease from the previous mill rate of $16.75.

He attributed the $1.25 per thousand reduction to continued strong growth in the Bethel tax base along with very modest increases in county and school assessments.

Other factors included a net decrease in municipal assessment and heavy usage of the undesignated fund balance.

The new rate creates a total town levy of approximately $3.17 million, spread across $204 million in taxable property in Bethel, Cole added.

Tax bills should go out within two weeks, following completion of a software conversion project. To avoid interest charges, Cole said first payments must be postmarked or received by Nov. 14, 2003, and second payments by May 14, 2004.
