NEW VINEYARD – Selectmen heard a presentation for an after-school program, set the tax rate and sold town-acquired property at the Sept. 22 selectmen’s meeting.

John Mills and a group of students talked to the board with about a teen after-school program. Mills asked if any space could be made available at the town office for students in grades seven through nine to meet after school.

Selectmen Fay B. Adams and Lowell Dubay Jr. supported the project, still in the conceptual stage, but warned the group that there were no funds available for it.

The selectmen awarded a bid for tax-acquired property to the second-highest bidder. The first bidder failed to close within 30 days and did not attend the meeting. Adams declined to identify the property or the buyer.

The property tax rate for 2003 was set at $12.80, compared last year’s rate of $12.25.

“Although it is an increase over last year, New Vineyard has one of the lowest mill rates in Franklin County,” Adams said.

“New Vineyard is at 100 percent valuation. Each year, any improvements on properties are inspected and accessed so that property value reflects current market value.”

Adams said reports would be mailed soon. “We had a computer bug that delayed getting them out earlier,” she said.

Selectman Jerry Howard was ill and did not attend last week’s meeting.
