POLAND – Mechanic Falls-Poland Adult Education has moved to the Poland Town Hall (upstairs), 1223 Maine St. Those interested should call for more information about new day and evening classes for skill upgrading, high school diplomas and General Educational Development testing. General interest classes offered in October are are follows:
Microsoft Word: It is an introductory course in word processing using Microsoft Word 97 and Windows 98. Wednesday, Oct. 1, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., four weeks.
Adult Heart Saver: The American Heart Association course is designed to teach the necessary skills to perform CPR on adults. Practical skills will be performed on mannequins to learn CPR and rescue breathing. Thursday, Oct. 2, from 6 to 9 p.m. Wear comfortable clothing.
Shag Mittens: Create the mitten used by loggers and sleigh riders. Bring two four-ounce skeins of worsted wool yarn or purchase wool from a local producer at the class. Learn how to start a mitten using four needles. The mittens look like a big, shaggy latch-hooked rug. Choose a plain shag or pencil-wrap design. Class open to novices or more advanced knitters. Tuesday, Oct. 7, 14 and 21, from 7 to 8 p.m.
E-mail Basics: Learn how to keep in contact with distant friends and family or shop from home. The hands-on course will give the skills needed to navigate the Internet using Internet Explorer and the ability to write, send and receive e-mail using Outlook Express. Monday, Oct. 20, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., three weeks.
Lyme Disease Identification: Learn what to look for and learn more about this frequently overlooked condition. Choose from two sessions. Tuesday, Oct. 21, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Poland Regional High School, and Wednesday, Nov. 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Poland Community School.
Cake Decorating: For beginners interested in learning how to decorate a specialty cake. Learn how to decorate a cake for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and more. Wednesdays, Oct. 22, 29, Nov. 5, 12 and 19, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Pediatric CPR: The American Heart Association course is designed to teach the necessary skills to perform CPR on infants and children. There will be slides on child and infant safety. Practical skills will be performed on mannequins to learn CPR and rescue breathing. Participants will receive a certificate upon completion. Thursday, Oct. 23, from 6 to 9 p.m.
Job Hunting on the Internet: Learn where to go on the Internet to locate job-hunting resources, including Maine Job Service listings, temporary employment agencies and newspaper classifieds. Thursday, Oct. 30, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Limited space.
