LEWISTON – A city water project could slow Sabattus Street traffic and drop water pressure Tuesday night.

Crews will be installing an isolation valve underground at the Sabattus Street-Franklin Street intersection beginning at 7 p.m. Kevin Gagne, deputy public services director, said the city will turn off the Central Avenue pumping station until the work is done.

“So part of the city will have low water pressure, especially the higher elevations,” Gagne said.

Gagne said he expects residents along Montello Street and in the Pleasant Street hill area to be affected. Crews are scheduled to work overnight and finish around 1 a.m., Gagne said.

The work will shut down one lane each of Sabattus and Franklin streets. Traffic will be slower, but won’t stop, he said.

The new valve will allow the city to turn off the water lines along Franklin Street without shutting down the pump station. Crews will use the valve in the coming weeks to clean and line those Franklin Street water lines, Gagne said. That work is scheduled to finish mid-October.
