SOUTH PARIS – Violet L. Iles, 99, formerly of Auburn, died Monday, Sept. 29, at Market Square Health Care Center.
She was born in New York City on July 1, 1904, the daughter of Henry and Mathilda Smith Weiler. After graduation from high school and secretarial school she was employed as secretary to one of the vice presidents of Sinclair Oil Company.
She married Arthur H. Iles on April 8, 1928, retired from work and moved from the city to suburban Rockville Centre in 1938, where she was involved in many civic organizations and enjoyed playing bridge.
In the early 1970s the couple retired to Lakewood, N.J., where she continued her civic activities with the Episcopal Guild, Republican Woman’s Club, AARP and the Paul Kimball Hospital. Following her loving husband’s death and with her health declining, she moved to Schooner Estates in Auburn to be closer to her family.
She is survived by her son, Robert Iles and his wife, Allidah of Andover; a grandson, Robert A. Iles of Tampa, Fla.; a granddaughter, Donna Whittle and her husband, Jeff of Kansas City, Kansas; and three great-grandchildren, Daniel, Kelly and Katherine Whittle, all of Kansas City, Kansas.
