RUMFORD – Selectmen will decide Thursday what, if any, steps will be taken regarding a proposed bypass around a section of Route 2.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the conference room of the Municipal Building.

The board met with selectmen from the neighboring town of Mexico on Tuesday to try to come to an agreement about the proposed bypass that would, if designated by the Maine Department of Transportation, circumvent the major business district of Mexico. Rumford selectmen have said the bypass is needed because a portion of Route 2 goes over several narrow roads in Rumford.

Also on Thursday, Roger Arsenault, a member of the governing board of Black Mountain, will update selectmen on the expansion of the ski area since Maine Winter Sports purchased it several months ago.

The board will also decide whether to replace the 87-year-old heavy velvet stage curtain in the historic Municipal Auditorium. Town Manager Robert Welch has estimated the cost at about $4,000 for the 32- by 24-foot curtain.

Other agenda items include a visit by a representative from Sen. Susan Collins’ office to discuss any federal issues the board may have, appoint a new Parks Commission member and discuss a revised general assistance ordinance.
