BETHEL – Autumn in Maine is one of the best times to view nature’s last big splash of excitement before Old Man Winter roars in and puts a damper on things.

It’s also the time when the Mahoosuc Land Trust struts out the annual fall foliage flotilla for a guided canoe trip down the Androscoggin River from Bethel to Hanover, said Trust Director Stephen Wight of Newry.

The 10.5-mile paddle, which is open to the public, begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Bethel Outdoor Adventure and Campground on Route 2 beside the river.

Interested boaters should arrive at 9:30 a.m. for the group put-in 30 minutes later, Wight said Tuesday afternoon.

He suggested that those with small children could either just paddle down to Moran’s Landing where participants will break for lunch, or join the group at the landing. Trip’s end is at the Hanover boat landing.

Going north on Route 2 from Bethel, the Moran’s Landing turnoff is on the right, immediately before the Welcome to Hanover sign.

Wight said all participants should bring a lunch and a flotation device. For more information, phone Wight at 824-2410.
