AUBURN – The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society will hold its second annual Walk for a Humane Community from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, at Railroad Park in Lewiston. The event will also include a bake sale, entertainment and a raffle.

All walkers are asked to collect pledges. The money received will be designated to create the new shelter’s Almost Home program. The project, in conjunction with the Abused Women’s Advocacy Project, will provide temporary care and shelter for pets of victims of domestic violence.

It is a “people” walk; dogs are welcome, but not necessary. Dogs must be leashed and have their rabies vaccination.

Pledge sheets are available at the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce in Lewiston, area veterinarians, libraries, the Humane Society and other local businesses.

The society has purchased a parcel of land on Strawberry Avenue in Lewiston, site for the new shelter. The Humane Society, located in Auburn, was built 30 years ago to care for 1,000 animals a year. Between 3,600 and 4,000 homeless, abandoned and abused animals now come through the doors each year.

The new shelter will be larger, more people- and animal-friendly and centrally located so adoptable animals will have a better chance at finding the perfect family. The shelter serves 10 municipalities, including Lewiston, Auburn, Turner and Greene, and a population of more than 90,000 people.

If interested in learning more about the walk or the plans for the new shelter, call the shelter at 786-4713. Anyone interested in volunteering at the shelter or adopting an animal can visit the shelter at 3312 Hotel Road or visit the Web site at www.gahumane.org.
