OTISFIELD – Fire Chief Garry Dyer, flanked by firefighters, informed selectmen Wednesday night that the department had formed a Public Safety Education Team.

“Back in December when Carey Grover died in the fire, we set up a memorial fund,” Dyer said. “At the time we were unsure what we would do with the money. We decided to set up a Public Safety Education Team.”

Dyer listed team members including Alicen Chase, who told the board the team plans to concentrate efforts on safety.

“We are planning fire and bike safety activities in memory of Carey Grover,” she said, noting Grover always rode his bike.

Chase outlined programs the team is working on. Next week is fire prevention week and they plan to hand out fun educational items to students at Otisfield Community School. The team plans to set up a table at town meeting with information about smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, planning escape routes, rope ladders, etc.

In the spring they are planning a bike safety clinic that they hope to make an annual event, Chase said. Selectman Gerry Robinson thanked the team and board members agreed it was a great idea.

In other business, Jim Bishop met with selectmen as a representative from the Thompson Lake Environmental Association. He requested the town and the association join forces to solve flooding problems on Cobb Hill. He also asked whether work could be completed this fall.

Selectmen agreed the two working together is a good idea but told Bishop he needed to speak with Road Commissioner Richard Bean Sr. to determine when the work could be done and if there is money in the road budget for the project. They told Bishop they would have Bean call him.

The board was informed through a letter from Maine Department of Transportation about speed limit changes on Route 121. The changes are: an increase to 50 for the section from Henigar Park to Edythe Lane and a decrease to 30 from there to Bean Road.

Selectman Assistant Marianne Izzo-Morin raised concerns about increasing the speed at the Spurrs Corner turn.
