LISBON FALLS – Civil War historian Charles W. Plummer, who is well known for his living-history presentations as Civil War generals, notably Joshua L. Chamberlain, will address the Lisbon Historical Society at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8. He has titled his talk “Honor’s Voice and Sacred Urns: The History of Lisbon’s Volunteers in the Civil War.”

Plummer has researched all of the volunteers who served from the town of Lisbon, the regiments they served with and the battles in which they participated. He also has identified those who were killed in action, wounded, taken prisoner of war, died of sickness and were missing in action. He also will share the story of Pvt. Joseph W. Wilbur, who was one of the few soldiers who had a personal interview with President Abraham Lincoln at the White House.

Lisbon’s population at the outset of the war was 1,376 and out of that number the town was credited by the state with 201 volunteers. It was reported that during the first year of the war the town furnished more volunteers in proportion to its population than any other town in Maine. Total casualties suffered by the volunteers from Lisbon during the four years of the war numbered 29.

The meeting is open to the public and will be held at the society’s archives on 9 Union St.
